THE site for Wirral Waters at Birkenhead, described as the biggest regeneration scheme in the country, was visited by the Prime Minister David Cameron yesterday (Thursday).

He was told that Wirral Waters will transform the economic fortunes of the Wirral, the broader Liverpool City Region and the North West as a whole, Alan Tilbury tells us.

It is stated that the scheme will lead to the transformation of derelict land within East Float at Birkenhead Docks, and 'will create tens of thousands of jobs during construction and approximately 27,000 jobs when complete'.

Approved

The planning application was approved by Wirral Council, and given the go-ahead by the government.

Leader of Wirral Council, Councillor Jeff Green enthused:

"I am delighted to have welcomed David Cameron to see for himself what a difference this development will make to Wirral.

"This is the most important regeneration project in Wirral's history and I am extremely pleased that the Prime Minister and Lord Heseltine recognise the significance of what is being achieved here through strong partnership working between Peel and the Council.

"I truly believe that Wirral Waters is a once in a lifetime opportunity which will make a dramatic contribution to transforming the area's economy and the lives of the people of Wirral and the wider city region."

30 years

The cost of the waterside redevelopment is estimated at £4.5 billion, will see a complete transformation of Birkenhead Docks, but will taken over 30 years to complete.

It will cover over 500 acres, with plans for a new marina as well as 15,000 new homes.
