WE ARE informed that a boat has badly damaged the top gates of Swarkestone Lock.

This is one of the six broad locks at the start of the Trent & Mersey after it leaves the Derwent, Keith Gudgin reports.

The locks gained the name of the 'Terrible Six' as being so very difficult to work and the reason that all too often the volunteer lockies at Stenson Lock are missing!

However, the trust maintains that the top gates have been struck by a boat and badly damaged which has left the lock inoperable.

It tells it will have to assess the damage and plan a suitable repair as soon as is possible, with the lock in the meantime closed to navigation.
