More winter works cancelled

Published: Tuesday, 23 November 2021

WHEN it was published the Canal & River Trust winter works programme looked very impressive.

Two more cancelled

But alas, slowly drip-fed, they are being cancelled, with two more in addition to the four already announced, making the winter works not at all impressive but becoming more and more non-existent as they are being cancelled one after another.

The latest to get the chop are on the Calder & Hebble Navigation and the Trent & Mersey Canal, Keith Gudgin reports.

The Calder & Hebble was to have winter works: Lock 16, Cooper Bridge, work to be carried out on the boil [yes 'boil'?] on Top and Bottom Gates & Fender Repairs. Canal Bank near Bridge 22, wash-wall repairs required.

The Trent & Mersey cancellation is: Croxton Tank (Aqueduct), Near Middlewich.

Navigation closed

Yet in both cases the stoppage notice state Navigation: Closed. Though of course with work not being undertaken the navigation is obviously open!

The reason given for the cancellations is as with the previous ones: We regret to inform you that we have had to cancel the work and remove it from our winter programme due to the impact of arising emergency works and resource to deliver them.

Not informed

We are not informed of these 'emergency works'.

Though the trust apologises for any inconvenience that this has caused, if open there is no inconvenience!
