THERE HAS BEEN A RECENT increase in swans and geese found unwell or dead along the Avon in Evesham.

The cause was confirmed yesterday (23rd December) by Defra that Avian Influenza (bird flu) is responsible, Roger Fox reports.

Defra also confirmed that the disease had been found in several swans and geese along the Avon at Stratford

Symptoms of avian flu in wild birds can include a swollen head, closed or watery eyes, unusual head or body movements, lethargy, difficulty breathing and sudden death.

Local councils are monitoring the situation closely and working with Defra to ensure any affected birds are removed safely.

Not to touch

Defra also advises the public not to touch or pick up dead wild birds and to keep dogs on a lead.

Sightings can be reported through the online reporting system or by calling 03459 33 55 77 and selecting option 7. These reports enable national agencies to monitor and manage the spread of avian influenza.
