Drowned man closes Gloucester & Sharpness

THE latest drowning is of a man who is believed to be in the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal.

Major search

The unnamed man disappeared from the towpath at Spatts bridge on Sunday, with a major search underway  by both the police and volunteers from the Severn Area Rescue Association in the water-based search which is ongoing.

This waterway is extremely deep it being built to ship dimensions and when first opened was recorded as being the deepest and widest in the world, which makes the discovery of a body difficult.

Popular moorings

Spatts Bridge at Frampton is a popular mooring place as well as an attraction for birdwatchers viewing the wetlands.

Navigation through the area has been closed, Keith Gudgin reports.
