Canal society on brink of being dissolved

IT HAS been announced that the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal Society has been on the brink of being dissolved for the past 18 months or so.

tixall wide 2It was in January of this year that in its magazine Broadsheet the treasurer, acting as the chairman, announced his intention to dissolve the society and distribute its assets.

Unable to be resolved

But the situation was unable to be resolved due to the pandemic restrictions, but an Annual General Meeting has been convened to take place next Monday 11th October at Bradmore Community Centre, Wolverhampton, WV3 7BW.

The society was founded in 1959 to fight the threatened closure and probable infilling of the canal, but that situation has changed considerably as other canals and rivers are thriving in the modern age of leisure and recreation.

Staffs Worcester Penkridge aThey feel however, they must be vigilant and keep a watchful eye on developments along the canal corridor—something the society has been very successful in over time. Though it is remarked that Canal & River Trust, the relatively new custodians of the canals, often need a nudge to remind it of its duties.

Inviting people

The society is inviting people who enjoy the canal, whether boater, walker, cyclist or fisher to please come along and show support for the society and the waterway.

It is stated that although some progress has been made with keeping the society going, it is not enough and some measure of support will be necessary if it is to carry on.
