Snapped paddle rods close canal—but now re-opened

BOTH paddle rods on a lock gate have snapped closing the Staffs & Worcs.

For the two paddle rods to snap on a lock gate must surely show their weakened condition, but this is what Canal & River Trust state has occurred to the rods on Shutt Hill Lock (41), Keith Gudgin reports.

No reason given

As there is no reason given by the trust for the two to snap at the same time on this Acton Trussell lock, it can only be assumed their weakened condition is responsible.

However the rods were quickly repaired by the trust's team with the lock now re-opened.
