Caldon Canal latest to be closed

THE Caldon Canal is now added to the list of closed canals.

Restricted supplies of water feeding both the Caldon and Trent & Mersey canals, and little prospect of rainfall in the immediate future, means closure of the main line of the Caldon, Keith Gudgin reports.

No passage for boats

From Hazelhurst Junction to the end of the waterway at Consall Forge, there is now no passage for boats.

Even with rainfall it will take a while for water levels to resume enough to allow navigation, so the stoppage could be extensive, as obvious from the information that there will be no update until the end of the month.

There are a number of boats trapped in the stoppage, and with it being a dead-end waterway, with no means of escape.

Worried about Trent & Mersey

Boaters are telling us they are worried about the Trent & Mersey Canal that already has restrictions from Harecastle Tunnel to Middlewich through lack of water.
