Another heel post fails

ANOTHER lock has been closed after its heel post failed.

This failure of the heel post on Turnerwood Top Lock (36) on the Chesterfield Canal follows that of the lock on the Sheffield & South Yorkshire that also failed, Keith Gudgin reports.

Snapped

This time however, vandalism is not being blamed, but we are told it snapped on Monday, closing the navigation.

However, the massive heel post on which the gate swings, is hardly likely to snap, but as Keith comments—more likely rotted through and crumbled!

Engineers are expected at the lock today, Wednesday.
