Aire & Calder open at last

IT TOOK all of eight months but the Aire & Calder breach has at last been repaired.

It was on the 10th of December last year when the waterway breached near its junction with the New Junction Canal, stopping all boating movement, Keith Gudgin reports.

Re-opened today

It re-opened today, Friday, once again allowing navigation on the waterway.

However there are hidden underwater obstructions along the bank edges on both sides that could pose a danger to navigation within the area of the breach.

When navigating it is advised to keep to the centre line where possible, and when passing other craft to keep a minimum of four yards from the bank edge.

Repairs to the damaged banks will be undertaken in the future.
