And another canal closed

THE latest canal closed is the Huddersfield Broad Canal.

It is Lock 9 that  has suffered 'structure failure', with the canal closed at its junction with the Huddersfield Narrow, and in reporting Keith Gudgin remarked 'seems as if there are more closed than open now'!

Emergency repair

We are told the team are undertaking an emergency repair to seal the paddle chamber closed to prevent the stretch of navigation from Lock 9 on the Huddersfield Broad to Lock 1E on the Huddersfield Narrow from draining.

In doing so this means that Lock 9 is now non-operational and the navigation from Lock 9 upstream to Bridge 17 Loco Lift Bridge (pictured) is closed.

The problem is access limitations and requiring a diving team to replace the paddle, that is being organised.
