THE Rochdale Canal was closed at Newton Heath over the week-end as an angler pulled out a suspect explosive device.

The police immediately closed nearby shops and the roads preventing any boats approaching the area, Alan Tilbury reports.

Very suspicious

It was a local businessman who reported that an angler had pulled something from the canal that looked very suspicious so contacted the police.

This resulted in a bomb squad being called and the man pointing out the device that was lying on the towpath, with it being immediately closed.

The bomb squad took the device away and everything eventually reopened.
