Broken lock needs new gates

THE stoppage at the Grand Union Canal Lock 71 at Kings Langley has proved worse than first discovered.

Its gates are in such a poor condition that they have to be replaced with new ones, that of course have to be manufactured, Keith Gudgin reports.

Navigation closed

Though there had been passage for narrowboats but not broad beams, this too has stopped with the navigation closed to all boats, though some attempt is being made with equipment to re-open to narrowboats only until the lock gates can be replaced.

However the success of this will not be known until the end of the week.
