Otters in the Avon

OTTERS have been seen on the banks and in the water of the Avon at Stratford.

Three otters have been spotted on the town side bank of the river by a woman walking her dog, Alan Tilbury reports.

Not welcomed by fishermen

However, as carnivorous they will certainly not be welcomed by the fishermen as fish is a great part of their diet, but they are a protected species and are now recovering from very nearly being wiped out, mainly by pesticides in the waterways.

Unlike the beaver that gnaws trees to make dams that can interfere with the flow of waterways, the otter does no such thing, and with the exception of fishermen, are usually welcomed.
