Floating restaurant destroyed by fire

THE Embankments Floating Bar and Grill Restaurant on the Medway in Maidstone was destroyed by fire yesterday (Wednesday).

Such was the intensity of the blaze that Maidstone was covered by smoke resulting in urgent advice to residents to keep doors and windows shut, Alan Tilbury reports.

Reduced visibility

For hours the bridge over the river was closed as it was in the path of the smoke that drastically reduced visibility for drivers.

Nearby moored boats were hastily moved away from the fire as it raged completely destroying the boat. No one was injured in the blaze.

Breathing apparatus

Three fire engines together with a water rescue team attended with their crews wearing breathing apparatus using hoses to extinguish the fire.
