Someone should have noticed

YOUR correspondent Mrs L Hartley’s letter is the first that I have read which mentions the state of the valves controlling the working of the reservoir, writes Roger Fox.

I wonder whether it was in regular use as a canal feeder at all and the answer to this query may reflect the attention, or lack of attention, which the local CaRT staff paid to its condition.

Bottoms too close to tops

My experience of the Peak Forest and Macclesfield canals is that their bottoms are too close to their tops and part of this problem may be due to insufficient water being fed from Whaley Bridge.

On other canals I have been aware of staff making frequent changes to feeder flows to suit daily conditions. If this were the case at Whaley Bridge surely someone should have noticed what was happening?
