Man dies in Leeds & Liverpool Canal

THE police were alerted to a car in the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Appley, discovering a body.

The area was sealed off as the emergency recovered the body of a man that was floating near to the vehicle, Dugald Campbell tells us.

No obvious reason

The man appeared to be in his 70's, and there is no obvious reason why the car left the road and plunged into the waterway.

This occurred at 11pm with the death not being treated as suspicious and the matter referred to the coroner.
