'Gates by water' problem

THE Canal & River Trust recently confirmed that where possible lock gates will be transported by water using barge transport.

Yet it has overlooked the fact lock gates are built at its Stanley Ferry workshops on the Aire & Calder Navigation, that has no facilities for loading barges with its gates.

It was CaRT Waterway Manager Jon Horsfall who recently confirmed that where possible gates would in future be transported by water, using its contractors' plant and vessels for that purpose. But with no loading facilities this can hardly be achieved.

There was an investigation promised to ascertain if the issue can be resolved, but there has been nothing yet.
