Longer Grantham cruises

THE boats on the restored section of the Grantham Canal will be able to have longer cruises this year with more of the navigation cleared to take The Three Shires trip boat.

The way has been cleared beyond  Casthorpe Bridge, with the width extended, after a gang of volunteers worked through the winter  both on the widening of the channel and the channel itself.

Difficult to discover

The problem however has been the leaks that are difficult to discover, and that have reduced the level of water in the canal above Lock 17. (Pictured.)

But after a great deal of evacuation and packing with clay the leaks have been reduced considerably, though it is believed there are still more to find, so the search goes on, knowing from bitter experience that even a small leak can eventually turn into a flood.
