FREEMAN'S Lock on the Grand Union Canal in Leicester that is having new gates, will have an 'Open Day' this Saturday and Sunday.
The lock, that is situated by the weir at the southern end of the Mile Straight will be 'open' for the public to go down into its chamber and see how a lock operates, Alan Tilbury tells us.
Gates replaced
The lock, that was constructed in 1888 is having its two top gates replaced and its brickwork repaired as part of the winter maintenance.
Andrew Morris, Customer Operations Manager for Canal & River Trust, explained:
"We are opening up the site to visitors this weekend, providing a unique chance for visitors to venture to the bottom of the drained lock chamber. Visitors will get a guided tour by one of the expert historians who will explain about the repair and restoration works we are doing here.
"The lock gates are unlikely to be replaced again for another 25 years, so this really is a rare opportunity for visitors."
The lock will be 'open' from 10am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday, and the last entry into the lock will be 2.30pm. Sturdy footwear is recommended for the walk. If footwear is deemed inappropriate, entry will not be allowed.
