PLANS to install new lock gates on a lock in Staveley on the Chesterfield Canal can now go ahead thanks to a funding  from the Veolia Environmental Trust.

The Trust awards grants to support social and environment activities as part of the Landfill Communities Fund.

It has awarded Derbyshire County Council a grant of £37,500 towards the manufacture and installation of new gates for Staveley Town Lock at Staveley Town Basin. The picture shows Chesterfield Canal Trust's volunteers working on Town Lock.

The grant was one of 53 recently awarded by the Veolia Board to community and environmental projects across the UK, with the grants totalling over £1.4m.

Derbyshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, Councillor Dean Collins, explains:

"Redeveloping Staveley Basin is all part of our plans to create a thriving local economy in Derbyshire to benefit everyone. This funding will help us continue to restore the canal and make more of the waterway navigable as well as improving the area for visitors to help boost tourism."
