PLANNING permission has been granted for a £400 millions port and cargo hub that it is claimed will create more than 2,000 jobs.

The scheme by Peel Holdings at Barton, will provide container ship berths, with road and rail connections.

The plans for what is named Port Salford, were first proposed five years ago, but the Highways Agency had concerns about the massive scheme.

The port will be able to double the amount of water freight into Manchester, with five container berths for ships arriving via the Manchester Ship Canal.
