THE latest plans for waterfront housing in on the former site of Mexborough Power Station on the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation.

Doncaster Council planning committee is shortly to make a decision on planning permission for 212 flats at the site between the waterway and the Don.

However, a similar plan was rejected two years ago as the councillors believed the land should be used for industry, and were concerned about smells from a sewage works.

A report before the committee also warns the land was left contaminated by its former use as a power station but proposals have been included in the application for clearing up the contamination.

The Environment Agency has stated that the area must be made safe for human habitation before any building work starts. The agency has also shown concerns about flooding.
