Email: Boat clubs accomodate

Ralph Freeman bemoans the fact that retired boaters who cruise the system for (say) eight months of the year, had to buy/rent a 'home' mooring to cover the winter.
This is not necessarily the case. Boat clubs are usually able to accommodate winter visitors. Certainly at our club (Coventry Canal Society) where a good many boats were taken out of the water for the winter, it provided welcome additional funds to the club.
Relatively cheap
The boater had a relatively cheap mooring, the facilities of a boatyard and the club benefited financially. The only proviso being that the boats did not arrive before lift-out day and departed before re-floating day.
Try it, you will find that it will work.
