Towpath warning

THE country has now has its first frost of the winter, so comes the annual warning to those using the towpaths to take extra care.

Canal & River Trust has issued the warning for those using its towpaths to take care and for people to be aware of the dangers of icy waterways now that temperatures have dropped, Alan Tilbury reports.

Dangerous

Towpaths, bridges and particularly lock sides can become dangerous now that winter is upon us, and should we have snow it can conceal boat mooring rings and ropes which, unless people are paying attention, can be easy to trip over, with people advised to keep away in such conditions.

But most important, no one should ever attempt to walk on or test the thickness of the ice on the waterways, and particularly keep children and animals away.
