CaRT objecting to new marina

FROM encouraging the building of marinas, Canal & River Trust has possibly realised there are now too many, and has objected to one proposed for the Coventry Canal.

Once again it is a mixed use development of houses and a marina. The plans include normal associated facilities — boat workshop, chandlery, retail shop, restaurant and takeaway, together with houses and light industrial units, Roger Fox tells us.

Hawkesbury Junction

This is on the land that was originally a power station, very close to the one being reported in narrowboatworld as having its plans refused, both not far from Hawkesbury Junction with the Oxford Canal.

CaRT gives many reasons for its objection, but primarily stating:

'We object to the application on the basis that the proposed lock entrance structure, towpath bridge, the marina building and residential plot 18 are out of keeping with the character of the area'.

Not recommending

Environmental Protection Officer, Pete Mackintosh is also recommending refusal based upon contaminated land, though admitting that noise and air quality could be dealt with via conditions at a later stage.

From the plan it is envisaged that the proposed marina would accommodate in the region of 230 boats on finger berths.
