Encouraging disabled use of canals

HALTON Disability Partnership held an event on Saturday at the Bridgewater Motor Boat Club in Runcorn to thank its members and supporters for their help, writes Frank Hurst.

The Bridgewater Canal has a long and distinguished history in disabled access to the waterways, there are on the Bridgewater Canal numerous community based narrowboats many of which over the years have been launched by local patron Ken Dodd who has given countless hours supporting charitable use of the canal system, and now Halton Disability partnership hope that more disabled people will avail themselves of the wonderful amenity that the waterways provide.

Pledge support

The guests of honour at the event were the Mayor and Mayoress of Halton Councillor Tom McInerney and Councillor Mrs Angella McInerney, the Mayor again pledged his support for both the charity and the fine waterways system in the area and continuing commitment to the inland waterways system in general.

Below is a photograph of the Mayor onboard the adapted narrowboat Wizard which gave local disabled volunteers and supporters a trip up the Bridgewater Canal on this fine autumn day.
