Autumn on the Trent & Mersey

Published: Friday, 12 October 2012

WE HAVE now had the first hard frost on the Trent & Mersey Canal (in the Stone region) and some of the trees are starting to change colour. The 'silly season' is over for another year and the volume of boats out and about is dropping rapidly, writes Ralph Freeman.

In my opinion the next six months are the best on the canals. So, it may be cold, but modern clothing has excellent insulating properties and unless the canal actually freezes up I don't find the cold much of a problem.

Just stoke up the stove!

A few weeks back there were discussions as to why people choose to live on the canals. Well, this was the view out of my side doors the other morning as the sun came up. The photo illustrates why I love living on the canals. Need I say more?
