Slipway closed

AFTER a review of the operation of the slipway at West Stockwith Basin on the Chesterfield Canal, the decision has been made to close it unless  Canal & River Trust staff are available to supervise.

A spokesman for the Trust explains:

"We have not made this decision lightly, but the review has highlighted a number of safety concerns. Despite asking the operator for reassurance on these matters, none have been received and so we are unable to allow its independent operation.

"Our Boating Trade Team will begin the process of setting up a contract for the operation of the slipway with the aim of reopening it as soon as possible."
