Horse drawn boat travels entire L&L

IT MUST have been with a sigh of relief that Sue Day finished her marathon trek with a horse drawn boat of the entire length of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal from Leeds to Pier Head at Liverpool.

Chairwoman of the Horse Boating Society, Sue, together with horse Bilbo Baggins and crew of the traditional narrowboat Elland did the 128 miles from city to city, taking a leisurely five months.

Very welcome

Sue tells that they were made very welcome, as well as surprising many as they travelled the length of the waterway, but it was an enjoyable experience.

There are now only five horse drawn boats in the country, and so it is a very rare sight, this journey being the first of its kind in 68 years, with the Society trying to preserve and promote horse boating, and keep the skills and traditions going.

Both woman and horse are very fit after there journey, with Sue telling that Bilbo is 'absolutely fine, we have been taking it very easy'.
