Don't want more water freight

IT HAS been revealed that around 4,000 people signed a petition against more freight being transported on the Manchester Ship Canal.

The outcry was because more freight on the canal would mean the swing bridges that carry major roads across the waterway would be closed to traffic more often and cause delays, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Little concerned

They seem little concerned that movement of freight by water would see less freight on the roads, but are only concerned about being held up as bridges are swung open to allow the ships to pass.

Peel Ports, that own the Manchester Ship Canal, have put forward proposals to increase freight fourfold, that has caused such opposition.

Peak times

One councillor, Celia Jordan though leading the campaign for more freight being carried by water, wants Peel Ports to avoid using the ship canal at peak times.

Peel has stated it would look at a new notification system and ways of relaying bridge openings locally.
