WITH the guidance of British Waterways £174,000 is being spent on the Calder & Hebble Navigation—but on wildlife.

People living by the waterway have been asked to 'improve' it by volunteering to form a Wildlife Action Squad to 'help to improve the habitats of wildlife living along the waterway such as bats, voles and otters'.

It was last year that the project was awarded £174,000 by the Big Lottery Fund, and it needs to recruit volunteers to form the Wildlife Action Squad.

The squad will be under the supervision of a project officer, but it is expected that eventually the volunteers will be more independent, taking on responsibility.
