Aqueduct could be repaired

THE aqueduct carrying the Shropshire Union Canal over a road in Nantwich could at last be repaired.

Though discussions have been going on for many years, finance has been the stumbling block, with British Waterways telling it would cost £400,000 to repair.

Cosmetic

The repair is mostly cosmetic and general maintenance, but British Waterways it is reported, have contacted the town council with the information that with charitable status and using money intended for engineering work could raise the cash to undertake the work that is needed, according to Town Clerk Riddell Graham, who adds:

"They will be looking for a contribution from us and how much depends on what the council says. But it is an opportunity to get an important gateway to the town looking better."

The aqueduct, that was built by Thomas Telford has crumbling brickwork, rusting steelwork and needs painting.
