AN INSURANCE company is warning boaters to look after their possessions on their boats as there is 'low life out there'.

Towergate, that specialise in narrowboat insurance are giving out advice to their narrowboat owner customers about taking care of their boats and preventing thefts.

Money well spent

The company advise that it is worth spending a little money, and taking extra care, especially when leaving a boat moored by the towpath for any length of time, advising that mooring in a well run marina with good security is the best thing to do, believing the money spent will reward peace of mind.

Towergate give the advice that when mooring in unsupervised marinas or along the canal, boaters need to take more serious security measures, stating 'these become especially important for craft moored on the towpath side in inner urban areas. Country moorings have also been the victims of crime, with boats in some remote locations being targeted by thieves'.

The advice is also given to keep valuables out of sight, and preferably off the boat altogether, when you are away. Shut the curtains, especially on the towpath side, to stop people looking into your boat. Secure anchors, gangplanks, ropes and gas bottles—there's lowlife out there that will help themselves to almost anything!
