BOTH British Waterways and The Environment Agency are wanting to recruit volunteer lock keepers, with one working on the Thames too good to be true!

Volunteer George Cook tells that he volunteered as an assistant lock keeper for the Environment Agency at Shepperton Lock.

Since July

He tells that he has been working as a volunteer lock assistant since July, 'and I absolutely love it'. Then George goes on to say 'It's been a fantastic experience so far, a really great way to spend a summer'.

Then he really lays it on, virtually word for word of the Environment Agency publicity machine: 'I've learnt how locks work, have met lots of interesting and friendly people, and have seen for myself how much effort the Environment Agency puts into maintaining the Thames'.

Next year

Then of course comes the bit about next year: 'I'm definitely going to volunteer next year too, and would encourage anyone who enjoys working outdoors and has an interest in the river to do the same. It gives you a fabulous insight into a completely different way of life'.

Doesn't that all rather sound familiar to you?
