A MAN who jumped from a Worcester Bridge into the Severn missed the water hitting a wooden jetty instead, killing himself.

Martin Portman, wearing swimming trunks, jumped off  Carrington Bridge into the Severn, but was pronounced dead when taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester a coroner’s court heard, with an autopsy revealing he had died from multiple injuries.

Unsuccessful

A paramedic tried to resuscitate Martin Portman before the emergency services arrived, but was unsuccessful.

The hearing was addressed by four psychiatrists and a community psychiatric nurse, all stating there was no identifiable mental illness, but admitted he was a suicide risk, making four attempts at suicide including throwing himself from the second floor of Worcestershire Royal Hospital and perching on a parapet of a bridge on Christmas Day 2009.
