Canals running dry!
MORE waterways are being closed due to lack of water.
The dry weather is having a drastic effect on the waterways, Keith Gudgin reports.
Birmingham & Fazeley
Curdworth Flight on the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal was yesterday, Monday, closed through lack of water at Lock 1 to Lock 7, as running water down and hoping to carry on today to bring it up to navigation level.
Rochdale
Though Lock 7 on the Rochdale Canal has had its fabric dam installed and is expected to reopen today, low water has closed the navigation from Lock 27 to Lock 30 at Todmorden 'until further notice'. LATEST—Rochdale now open.
Huddersfield Narrow
Huddersfield Narrow Canal remains closed between Lock 1E and Lock 16E from Ashton-under-Lyne to Saddleworth, which, it is told, is caused by a leak at the aqueduct near Lock 12E.
Engineers are on-site this week together with contractors hoping to complete the repairs.
Lancaster Canal
Water levels on the Lancaster Canal still remain low, meaning the Glasson Flight will need to stay closed for now.
Teams are working to raise the levels, but restoring things to normal will take some time, though progress is being made we are told.
Erewash Canal
The Erewash Canal is still closed through lack of water from Pastures Lock 64 and Potters Lock 69. This waterway has been closed at various pounds for weeks now.
Both the lower midland and southern canals have experienced a good amount of rain, and are so navigable.
