Heading for a stoppage record

Published: Friday, 28 June 2024

WITH two navigation closures yesterday, 27th, it looks as though we are heading for a monthly record.

lemonroyd2The two closures are one on the Aire & Calder Navigation Main Line and the other on the Stainforth & Keadby Canal, Keith Gudgin reports.

Two closures

Lemonroyd Lock on the Aire & Calder had a  mechanical failure  on the 24th, that was then repaired, but now has an hydraulic failure with the navigation closed once again, making it two closures in three days.  The picture shows our boat somewhat 'lost' is this large commercial lock.

The stoppage on the Stainforth & Keadby Canal yesterday was caused by the failure of Keadby Swing Bridge, that stops Keadby Lock from working as access through the adjoining bridge is impossible. This prevents access from and to the tidal Trent.

The good news

The good news yesterday is that the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal has reopened with the Talybont Drawbridge 144 having its electrical fault repaired.

And more bad news

Still more bad news with a top ground paddle failing today, Friday, on Colwick Lock 21 on the Trent & Mersey Canal.

This means that it is not possible to fill the lock.

We are told the reactive team are on their way to attempt to repair, but currently it is not possible to pass through the lock.
