Second Rochdale paddle failure

THE failure of two paddles on Newton Heath Lock (69) makes it the second such failure on the  Rochdale Canal this month.

Before this it was the Anthony Lock (77) paddle failure that closed the canal, as Keith Gudgin reported.

We are told a local team is 'gathering materials and equipment', but this time it is admitted that there are two paddles that have failed therefore making it impossible to work the lock.

It seems the pound will have to be emptied in this instance as we are told it will not be until it is replenished that the lock will be available for use.
