Emergency repairs close South Stratford Canal

THE South Stratford Canal is closed owing to emergency repairs.
The condition of the bottom gate on Birmingham Road Lock (52) at Stratford has caused Canal & River Trust concerns, reports Keith Gudgin.
Bows when filled!
It has had a number of such concerns reported over the condition of this gate, which bows when filled!
It is still operable with the paddle still working but it is expected it could soon get substantially worse, so it is being repaired, it states, in time for next summer.
It is closed to enable the problem to be investigated but it is understood that the gate's planking needs reinforcing with bracing plates. to prevent the bowing effect.
