Not looking good for Leicester Section summit

Published: Thursday, 28 July 2022

BOTH Foxton and Watford flights are now under restriction with the possibility of closure.

Foxton Flight navigation is restricted to between the hours of 10am and 4pm, with the last boat allowed at 3.15pm, Keith Gudgin reports.

This is to allow pumps to lift water from the Grand Union below Watford Flight onto the Leicester summit, but the Grand Union itself is not at maximum capacity so it is not know how long this can continue.

The image shows the condition of a Watford Lock, with water wasted running into the overflow below the flight.

Once again Canal & River Trust ask that boaters share locks where possible, but both flight being narrow, it is difficult how this can be achieved.

At Watford the restrictions are the same, from 10.am to 4pm, and again the trust asks that boaters  save water by making sure that all gates and paddles are closed after use, sharing a lock if possible and waiting for oncoming boats where appropriate.

Under revue

The situation is being kept under revue with the hope that there will be heavy rainfall in the near future to ease the situation.
