More Trent & Mersey Canal restrictions

IN ADDITION to the present restriction on Harecastle Tunnel, more restrictions have been implemented on the Trent & Mersey Canal.

There are now restrictions on all the pounds from Stoke Bottom Lock (36) all the way to Longcroft Lock (60) a distance of 13 miles, Keith Gudgin reports.

Low rainfall

Again, low rainfall is being blamed together with planned engineering work to reservoirs, with the restrictions meaning that the long section will only be available for navigation between the hours of 8.00am to 12.00noon.

Passage through Harecastle Tunnel will also only be available be available between 8.00am and 12.00 noon daily.

The trust state it is not clear how long the restrictions will be in place, however if there is no significant, sustained rainfall it is likely further restrictions will be implemented.

Okay for visitors

It adding: 'While the restrictions will restrict the use of the canal by boats, the towpath will remain open for visitors and the local community alike to enjoy'.
