Trent & Mersey 'closed immediately' today

FOLLOWING on the announcement of more restrictions on the Trent & Mersey yesterday, comes notice of its closure.

Yesterday, Thursday, a 13 miles restriction was announced covering the waterway including all Stoke locks right down Heartbreak Hill to Sandbach.

But today, Friday, the navigation has been closed from Harecastle Tunnel right down Heartbreak Hill to King's Lock (71) at Middlewich, Keith Gudgin reports.

Canal & River Trust state it is experiencing low water levels that has forced closure between Lock 41, Plant's Lock and King's Lock 71.

At present no navigation is allowed on Heartbreak Hill, but the hope is that the waterway will reopen over the week-end.

The water has not been replenished to navigational levels so Heartbreak Hill will remain closed over the week-end.
