Varied capacity of reservoirs

Published: Thursday, 24 March 2022

The latest water holdings published by CaRT in its latest published Reservoir Watch table are either good news or bad news depending on where you are boating, writes Roger Fox.

The Grand Union North shows that reserves stand at 100% of capacity which will come as a surprise to many as it has been as low as 31% at the same time in recent years.

A bumpy summer

However boaters on the Peak Forest and Macclesfield canals can expect a bumpy summer with only 44.5% of capacity available—perhaps boat early while there is still water is the message here.

Things are marginally better for the Huddersfield Narrow and the Chesterfield canals with 60% holdings, but the message is clear—keep an eye on the published data.

It may be perverse to say it but let’s look forward to a wet season.
