Four weeks to repair a 'blown' paddle

Published: Thursday, 03 March 2022

THE 'blown' paddle on Newlay Top Lock on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal has been repaired and the flight reopened.

The stoppage occurred in late January, with Canal & River Trust telling this was due to a 'blown' ground paddle, but no intimation as to what this actually was, Keith Gudgin reports.

Since this time various activities have been undertaken including a dam being installed to enable, we were told, 'the opportunity to assess the full extent of the damage and plan the required repairs', and before this a leak was stopped.

There was limited navigation before the dam was installed with people on hand to assist boaters through the lock.

Yesterday, Wednesday, the work was completed and the navigation reopened.
