A NEW year and a new start for more winter works cancellations.

Cosgrove Lock (pictured) on the Grand Union Canal starts the ball rolling with its scheduled winter stoppage work cancelled, Keith Gudgin reports.

This quickly follows on with the cancellation of the winter stoppage of the work to replace both the top and bottom gates at Thorne Lock on the Stainforth & Keadby Canal.

Both locks are in poor condition and require attention, but both are cancelled with reasons being given for not undertaking the required work.

In the case of Cosgrove Lock the reason given by Canal & River Trust is 'we are exploring all possible delivery options to try and complete the works with minimal customer impact due to a change in delivery methodology', adding that the works will be completed under a restriction rather than a stoppage.

Exploring options

For the Stainforth & Keadby cancellation, there is at least a reason, in that the trust tell that it is the manufacture of the gates that is preventing the work going ahead, with the trust explaining that it is 'exploring all possible delivery options to try and complete the stoppage with minimal customer impact.

No actual dates are given when work will commence in either case, although early March has been quoted for the gates to be installed on the Stainforth & Keadby.

These two further cancellation of winter stoppages bring the total to eleven that are not going ahead as was first planned.
