Volunteers have not taken jobs

REFERRING to the following statement by Victor, Giles Williams writes:

'For the fact that CaRT needs volunteer lock keepers and other volunteers doing some of the work of the discarded lengthsmen, shows they are needed. So in actual fact the volunteers have taken their jobs'.

Wrong direction

This rather points the blame in the wrong direction.

Volunteers haven't taken any jobs.

The Canal & River Trust (and before them, BW) took those jobs and made the people doing them redundant.

A rather short-sighted decision, but entirely their responsibility, not that of the volunteers who stepped up to help.

Let's be careful about what we say.
