Magnet fishing allowed on Scotland's canals

Published: Monday, 26 April 2021

AFTER pressure from the national body, magnet fishing is to be allowed in Scotland's canals.

Permission has been granted to the Official Magnet Fishing Scotland, but as yet only in Edinburgh, Keith Gudgin reports.

Increasing during lockdown

With the pastime increasing during lockdown, pressure has been put on Historic Environment Scotland, with further applications being submitted for Inverness and Glasgow.

Canals are designated as scheduled monuments in Scotland, in recognition of their historical importance, and unauthorised magnet fishing could lead to a fine of up to £50,000.

Safe working practices

The magnet fishing agreement was signed between Scottish Canals and Official Magnet Fishing Scotland which set out safe working practices and waste disposal policies.
