Silt closes Soar

Published: Wednesday, 24 February 2021

THE excessive amount of silt washing down the Soar is causing problems.

It jammed the bottom gates of Radcliffe Lock on Sunday making them inoperable, but has not yet been cleared, Keith Gudgin reports.

Stopped from opening

The silt has been caused by the recent flooding of the river, that has built up against the gates stopping them from opening.

A Canal & River Trust team have been on site yesterday, Tuesday, to attempt to free the gates but the job was discovered to be bigger than expected.

It requires a dredging boat to come down river and clear the silt.  There is no notice when this will arrive.
