More stoppages on the Grand Union and Huddersfield Narrow canals

THE Grand Union Canal is blocked by the failure of a swing bridge.

Winkwell Swing Bridge a Hemel Hempstead has suffered a 'structural failure' and is currently closed, though at present no further information, Keith Gudgin reports.

Huddersfield Narrow

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal is closed by the failure of Paddock Foot Lock 5E) and again a 'structural fault' is given as the reason.

This time however there seems no intention of a quick repair as we are told that though 'investigations are currently underway' it will be closed until the end of March.

Newark Town Lock

Newark Town Lock was a further failure last Thursday with its bottom gate suffering a mechanical failure but yesterday, Thursday, managed to complete a repair.

The bottom gates are now operational and the lock in use.

Trent & Mersey still blocked

The landslip caused by the torrential rain at Anderton on the Trent & Mersey Canal has still not been cleared, but told the teams continue to work together to form a method of repair to the significant slip of material at Soot Hill Bridge.

Both towpath access and canal navigation remain closed.
